About the Artist: “Over the past 20 years Jackie Hinkson has expanded his repertoire of subjects and his range of media. In addition to the numerous (some 75) sketch pads that he has filled with sketches and visual notes on people, places and events, he has produced " in which he has depicted events from the life of Christ in a contemporary Trinidadian context. These works exhibited in 2002 ­and 2003 and have received wide national acclaim. In 2002 the Unit Trust Corporation sponsored a retrospective of Hinkson's work covering some 40 years. It included exhibitions of drawings and sculpture, watercolours, oils and murals (including the Life of Christ series). This retrospective was the impetus for a book published in December 2003 on Hinkson's drawings, 'Drawing for Days' -­ 40 years of Drawings by Jackie Hinkson. Hinkson continues to draw extensively and to paint plein-air watercolours and oils. He has begun a new series of figurative wood sculptures and is currently working on a 8 1/2 foot by 100 foot mural entitled 'Masquerade' in which certain aspects of Trinidad society are portrayed through the metaphor of Carnival. About BSoA: “The Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) is membership based organisation, directed by an 11-strong governing body who oversee policies and procedures. A Gallery Director and Assistant Gallery Director deal with the day to day administration and running of BSoA Galleries ... Affectionately known, as ‘The People’s Art Gallery,’ BSoA encompasses four separate galleries; the largest of which is the Onions Gallery, comprising of 2,000 sq feet, next is the Edinburgh Gallery, comprising of 650 sq feet and two smaller studios, Studio A and B, comprising of 450 sq feet each. About the Artist: “Born in Trinidad in 1956, Beverley always had a strong appreciation for Art throughout her primary and secondary education; therefore studying Fine Art in Canada with a Painting Major was a natural choice. After pursuing Painting with experimental themes in Canada, which was the contemporary trend in the late 70s, she returned to Trinidad and worked with watercolours and West Indian reality. For 19 years Beverley was the Art Teacher at Bishop Anstey High School in Port of Spain, and an Assistant Examiner for CXC Art & Craft and SBA in Barbados and Trinidad respectively. Event Description: "Super Saturday is held one Saturday of every month from 10am–2pm. Activities are spread throughout the museum and outside, and include many themed projects according to the season. FREE ADMISSION allows visitors to wander through all the galleries and to engage in as many different craft activities as they would like, and are suitable for children from toddlers to teens. There are 3-4 different activities on hand, some will require parental assistance, others are kids only! Homer’s Cafe is open so why not stay for lunch?! There is no need to sign up – just show up! Event Description: “The National Gallery of Jamaica’s new exhibition, the 'Annabella and Peter Proudlock Collection' will open on Sunday, July 30, 2017. Paul Issa will be the guest speaker at the function, which will start at 1:30 pm, and this will be followed by a musical performance by singer Stephanie. The 'Annabella and Peter Proudlock Collection' exhibition documents some fifty years of collecting, mostly of Jamaican art but also of art and craft from elsewhere in the Caribbean and Central America. The exhibition also tells the story of a particularly group of people who made their lives in post-Independence Jamaica and who were deeply immersed in the cultural and artistic developments of that moment, to which they actively contributed ... The opening of the 'Annabella and Peter Proudlock Collection' coincides with the National Gallery’s 'Last Sundays' programme for July 2017. While the opening function starts at 1:30 pm, and will be followed by the musical performance by Stephanie. Stephanie is a singer, songwriter and model, whose reggae fusion sound incorporates the essence of reggae, R&B, soul, dancehall, and pop. After a stint with the Ashearibbean Performing Arts Company, where she trained and toured as a singer, dancer, and musical theatre actor, Stephanie provided backing vocals for local and international artists, such as the Basque Band singer Fermin Muguruza and reggae acts such as Groundation, Cherine Anderson, Coco Tea, Chaka Demus & Pliers and Mr Vegas ... The National Gallery’s doors will, as usual, be open from 11 am to 4 pm. The event is open to the public and admission is free; all are cordially invited. Contributions to the donations box are gratefully accepted and the gift and coffee shops will also be open. The planned video-installation was sadly put on hold last month due to the devastation his island of Saint Martin received by Hurricane Irma, but we are thrilled he is now able to travel and become our first Artist-in-Residence culminating in a dynamic and interactive video-installation exhibition at TIH. David Gumbs will be showing his work in conjunction with artists Deborah M. Carroll Anzinger, Spurgeonique Morley, Heino Schmid and Averia Wright - Curated by Tessa Whitehead ... The Island House introduces its current artist in residence hailing from St Martin, David Gumbs. Gumbs will show his work as part of a group exhibition alongside some of our Bahamian beloveds, artists Heino Schmid, Spurgeonique Morley, and Averia Wright. About the Artist: “Ebony G. Patterson (Jamaican, b. 1981 Kingston, lives Kingston and works Lexington, KY) is the recipient of many prestigious fellowships, awards and grants, including Joan Mitchell Prize Foundation Artist Grant (2015), the Aaron Matalon Award from the Jamaica Biennial (2014), William H. Johnson Prize finalist (2013), a Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica (2012), Small Axe Magazine and Andy Warhol Commissioned Grant (2012), and Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies (2011). Most recently, Patterson was awarded the 2016 Joan Mitchell Fellowship. This fall her work will be included in the 32 nd Bienal de São Paolo, Brazil (2016) and her solo exhibition Dead Treez travels to Boston University Art Galleries (organized by the Kohler Arts Center (2015) and travelled to the Museum of Art and Design, New York (2015-16). Recent solo exhibitions include The Studio Museum in Harlem (2016), the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art (2016), and Monique Meloche Gallery (2015). Patterson was featured in the 12th Havana Biennial: Between the Idea and the Experience, Havana, Cuba (2015); Prospect.3: Notes for Now, curated by Franklin Sirmans, New Orleans, LA (2014), and the Jamaica Biennial 2014, National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston. Her work has been featured in recent seasons of Empire, directed by Lee Daniels (20th Century Fox Television). Recent group exhibitions include Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art, Nasher Museum, Duke University (2016) travelling to Speed Museum (2017); Disguise: Masks and Global African Art, Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA (2015); and En Mas’: Carnival 21st Century Style, The Caribbean as Site Specific Performance at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans, LA (2015), National Art Gallery of the Cayman Islands (2016) and National Gallery of the Bahamas (2016).
