Event Description: “Faith plays a large part in the fabric of Bahamian society. As such, exceptional works of art allow the viewer to re-examine that devotion. The best works inspire, illuminate, and challenge what it means to have faith. On Thursday, March 30th starting at 7 p.m. the NAGB presents The Last Temptation of Christ, directed by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. It’s a deeply felt religious film that explores the issue of Christ being a man and not a religious icon. The film, unfairly maligned and attacked upon its release in 1988, has lost none of its power in the ensuing years, and can now be judged on its artistic merits rather than the hyperbole that accompanied it upon its release. Please note that the film is 3 hours long and will be screened from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ...”Read more: NAGB Film Event-The Last Temptation of Christ

Event Description: “The National Gallery of Jamaica’s Last Sundays programme for March 26, 2017, will feature the 'Jamaica Biennial 2017' and a special musical performance by BLACKasCOLE. Fronted by songstress Cecile Black, BLACKasCOLE’s performance style is a fusion of different genres: Alternative, Blues, Gospel, R&B, Reggae/Dub-Rock which they have integrated into a base component of Reggae and Dub; the result is a new genre that the band calls Jam-on-Dub ... we are particularly pleased to welcome back BLACKasCOLE, for what is guaranteed to be a phenomenal Last Sundays appearance. Visitors will be able to view the critically acclaimed 'Jamaica Biennial 2017' which opened in late February 2017 at three locations: the National Gallery of Jamaica on the Kingston waterfront, Devon House in New Kingston and National Gallery West in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay. Featuring a diverse mix of locally and overseas based artists, some of them well known and others emerging or new, the 2017 edition of the 'Jamaica Biennial' reflects the vitality of the Jamaican art scene and the complex global dynamics that shape the art of the Caribbean region today. As was first done in 2014, the 'Jamaica Biennial' features six specially invited international artists, from the Caribbean and its Diaspora—Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow, Raquel Paiewonsky, Marcel Pinas, Nadia Huggins at the National Gallery of Jamaica; Andrea Chung at Devon House; and David Gumbs at National Gallery West—and the exhibition also includes two special tributes to noted Jamaican artists—Alexander Cooper and Peter Dean Rickards, both of which can be viewed at the National Gallery of Jamaica. The exhibition includes work in conventional media and styles as well as more experimental work in digital and other contemporary media, including several mixed media installations. The largest and arguably the most ambitious such exhibition staged to date by the National Gallery, the 'Jamaica Biennial' runs at all three locations until May 28, 2017 ...”Read more: National Gallery of Jamaica Blog

Medulla Art Gallery Mourns the Death of Derek Walcott (1930–2017), Poet and Nobel Laureate of the Caribbean — Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies

Medulla Art Gallery Mourns the Loss of Derek Walcott (1930-2017)
Medulla Art Gallery Mourns the Death of Derek Walcott, Poet and Nobel Laureate of the Caribbean — Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies; Where: Medulla Gallery; Location: #37 Fitt Street, Woodbrook, Port-of-Spain; RSVP: Tel: (868) 680-1041 / Email: medullaartgallery@gmail.com
Condolences: “On hearing of Derek Walcott’s death this morning (March 18, 2017) there are so many memories of his unwavering support for both Aquarela Galleries and more recently Medulla Art Gallery. Derek was always 'there for us.' In the early 1990’s he contributed to Galerie Magazine with his article on Jackie Hinkson. More recently in September 2013 he presented readings from O Starry Starry Night at Medulla. His appreciation for our wish to educate the public on art was always positive. It is such an honour to have been associated, even in a very small way, with Derek’s legacy to his contribution to Caribbean art and literature ...”Read more: Medulla Art Gallery

About Derek Walcott (1930–2017): “Born on the island of Saint Lucia, a former British colony in the West Indies, poet and playwright Derek Walcott was trained as a painter but turned to writing as a young man. He published his first poem in the local newspaper at the age of 14. Five years later, he borrowed $200 to print his first collection, 25 Poems, which he distributed on street corners. Walcott’s major breakthrough came with the collection 'In a Green Night: Poems 1948-1960' (1962), a book which celebrates the Caribbean and its history as well as investigates the scars of colonialism and post-colonialism. Throughout a long and distinguished career, Walcott returned to those same themes of language, power, and place. His later collections include 'Tiepolo’s Hound' (2000), 'The Prodigal' (2004), 'Selected Poems' (2007), 'White Egrets' (2010), and 'Morning, Paramin' (2016). In 1992, Walcott won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel committee described his work as 'a poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by a historical vision, the outcome of a multicultural commitment.' ...”Read more: Poetry Foundation-Derek Walcott
About the Gallery: “Medulla Art Gallery has been established to carry on and develop the traditions of Aquarela Galleries. Medulla, as the name implies, will provide a core space for art education with public participation through exhibitions, forums and workshops.
