Exhibition: Luis Cruz Azaceta's “Swimming to Havana” - show EXTENDED through Monday, January 30th 2017 at Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery — New York, NY USA

Luis Cruz Azaceta's “Swimming to Havana”
through Jan 30, 2017 @ Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery
Exhibition: Luis Cruz Azaceta's “Swimming to Havana” Opening Reception on Saturday, November 5, 2016 @ 6:00pm-10:00pm - show EXTENDED through Monday, January 30th 2017 at Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery — New York, NY USA; Where: Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery NYC; Location: 139 Eldridge St., Lower East Side, New York, NY 10002; Tel: (646) 478-8055; Email: galeria.lyle@gmail.com
Event Description: “Lyle O. Reitzel presents 'Swimming to Havana' by Luis Cruz Azaceta - show EXTENDED through Monday, January 30th 2017 at LOR NY new space, 139 Eldridge St. Lower East Side, Manhattan, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with the artist’s presence. Azaceta has 5 years without presenting a solo show in the city of New York. 'Swimming to Havana' is a contradiction in itself when it refers to the body of work by a Cuban-American artist. Azaceta himself explains that one of his continuous subject-matter is that of los balseros that escape their social-political conditions by assuming the risk of crossing over to la Florida. In 2009 he conceived the idea of redirection the flow thus the idea of 'Swimming to Havana' is born. Azaceta creates the idea of Swimming back to Havana representing the implausibility of the idea for a Cuban-American, envisioning a journey between labyrinths and waterscapes.”Read more: Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery and Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery-Facebook
About the Artist: “Luis Cruz Azaceta (born April 5, 1942) is a Cuban American painter. Since the late 1970s the paintings and drawings of Luis Cruz Azaceta have been taking the moral and ethical pulse of this country. In usually large-format works, executed with highly expressive colors, Cruz Azaceta has dealt with themes of urban violence, the type of personal isolation that comes with living in a large and overcrowded city, the hellish conditions created by mismanaged government, the abuses and oppression of dictatorships and, in a number of highly affecting works done back in the late 1980s, the ravages of AIDS. Azaceta is a true maverick ... his art does not look much like anyone else’s ... He is a devotee of visual experiment who often develops parallel series in several media at once, and he has a tendency to combine materials in totally unexpected ways, as with his extended series of photographs mounted on twisted metal stud. Last but not least, Azaceta works constantly, is extremely prolific ...”Read more: Wikipedia-Luis Cruz Azaceta

Artist's Statement: “My work oscillates between painting as image and painting as a material process. I'm concerned with the tension that exists between the illusion and the surface. Working from personal photography and found images, I utilise the effects of reproduction and pixilation on a painterly aesthetic. I start by painting the image in a representational manner, then apply dragging techniques, pushing and pulling the paint and causing ruptures in the image. Within this I use geometrical abstractions, playing on a sense of entropy and order; the impermanence of form, but also the crystalline nature of its emergence. Through this process I try to understand and internalise perception and experience, whilst reflecting on a sense of modern day anxiety.”Read more: Axis Web-Dermot Punnett

The way I approach my work is usually very spontaneous, in that the works are executed utilizing no preliminary sketches, but allowing the work to evolve as I progress. Event Description: “Mothers build today the children who are going to build the world of the future. Come and learn from them, so we can build it all together. 'I have a dream,' is the sentence your mother lived by, from the moment she held you in her hands for the first time, and still today (and will until her last breath). She did everything in her power (of love) to see you grow up and become whatever you want to be. Still we as a society all turn our backs and leave her to manage this all by herself. Why do we leave our mothers behind? How can we support the pillars of civilization? What are some practical tools and next steps we can define to honor our mothers? How can we as a community all learn to mother, to nurture and to support the growth of our children and our society? A new black arts movement is painting a new aesthetic, one in which we liberate ourselves from our oppressors. A new black arts movement supports all indigenous struggles for self-defense and self-determination. Our soul sessions are community spaces where we connect, express, build and create this vision toward prefiguring a new society. Looking forward to welcoming you! Language: mix of French, Dutch and English, adapted to the needs of the participants. €5 donation, youth free ...”Read more: Soul Sessions: Mother's Reclaim the Earth-Facebook, A New Black Arts Movement-Facebook and A New Black Arts Movement

As a component of the National Exhibition 8 (NE8), the PS Room will house three special projects starting with Jeffrey Meris' 'Asue: 20/20.' 'Asue: 20/20' is a series of participatory objects, experiences and interventions drawn from the Yorubic tradition. Meris invited 19 people throughout New Providence to interchange objects in response to a prompt or an object he creates. Much like an economic asue, each week one person receives all twenty objects created/exchanged until the cycle is completed and all twenty participants have received an item. This cultural practice of communal saving is quickly dissipating from The Bahamas and the Caribbean Diaspora ... Join us on Saturday, Jan 21st from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. for an informal artist talk and an open studios session where the artist will speak about the genesis of the work with his collaborators ...”Read more: NAGB Event-Asue: 20/20
