About Michelangelo: “Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (Italian: [mikeˈlandʒelo]; March 1475–18 February 1564), was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art. Considered to be the greatest living artist during his lifetime, he has since also been described as one of the greatest artists of all time. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. A number of Michelangelo's works in painting, sculpture, and architecture rank among the most famous in existence. His output in every field of interest was prodigious; given the sheer volume of surviving correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century.”Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelangelo
About ASTT: “Before the Trinidad Art Society was born, a small group of painters, poets and writers including Amy Leong Pang and Hugh Stollmeyer among others – dubbed the “Society of Trinidad Independents”, taking their cue from the modernist movements in Europe- pointed the country into the headwinds of contemporary art. They revelled in Gauguin, Modigliani and the growing fascination with African art; their metaphysical leanings found a ready response in Shango – Baptist beliefs with strong echoes of Orisha in Benin. The group ran afoul of a fundamentalist press whose vitriolic attacks were partially responsible for the disintegration of the body (after nine years) in 1938. Their pioneering visual work, however, was to have a profound influence on the development of art in Trinidad and Tobago.”Read more: http://artsocietytt.org/about/

Event Description: “Ebony G. Patterson explores issues of visibility and “being seen” as it relates to the construction of social identity focused on gender, race and socioeconomic status in her native Jamaica. Join MAD educators on a guided viewing experience that uses her work as a platform to discuss these issues with visitors from all ages and backgrounds. Free with Pay-What-You-Wish Admission; 2nd floor galleries, MAD.” — Read more: MAD Museum-Ebony G Patterson Event and MAD Museum-Facebook
About the Exhibition: “'Dead Treez' is the first solo New York museum show by artist Ebony G. Patterson, who splits her time between Kingston, Jamaica and Lexington, KY. Incorporating mixed-media installations and jacquard photo tapestries, Patterson explores visibility, in terms of class, gender, race and the media. Her highly adorned, almost illuminated images and objects are intended to attract and seduce the viewers, challenging them to look closer. For 'Dead Treez,' Patterson assembled five eye-popping tapestries and a life-size figural tableau of ten male mannequins, dressed in a kaleidoscopic mix of floral fabrics. Meant to present a complex vision of masculinity, the installation is a meditation on dancehall fashion and culture, regarded as a celebration of the disenfranchised in postcolonial Jamaica. Her tapestries depict murder victims, as sourced through social media, embellished to seduce viewers into witnessing the underreported brutality experienced by those on the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder.” — Read more: MAD Museum-Ebony G Patterson Exhibition and MAD Museum-Facebook

Through material and contextual inquiries into objects ranging from firearms to fruit, the collection of works by Aisha Tandiwe Bell, Kudzanai Chiurai, Mohau Modisakeng, Valerie Piraino, Sable Elyse Smith and Ralph Ziman render visible the power relations produced by and through displacement, and the innovative strategies that transform even its most foreboding effects into dynamic and grounding cultural formations ...” — Read more: http://mocada.org/dis-place/
About MoCADA: “The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) uses the visual arts as a point of departure for exploring new artistic production across a variety of disciplines. Through exhibitions and programming, MoCADA incites dialogue on pressing social and political issues facing the African Diaspora, and fosters a dynamic space for the creation and continuous evolution of culture ... MoCADA was founded in 1999 by Laurie Angela Cumbo in a brownstone owned by the Bridge Street AWME Church in the Bedford Stuyvesant community of Brooklyn, New York. The concept of the museum grew from Ms. Cumbo’s graduate thesis at New York University, which focused on the feasibility of an African diaspora museum contributing to the revitalization of central Brooklyn economically, socially and aesthetically. The museum began with socially and politically charged exhibitions and public programs focused on contemporary issues impacting people of the African diaspora. Fourteen years later, MoCADA has grown to serve both adults and youth throughout the diaspora, with an emphasis on underserved communities of color, through a diverse range of exhibitions, education and community programs.” Read more: http://mocada.org/about/mission-history/
