About Joseph Mallord William Turner: “Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA (baptised 14 May 1775–19 December 1851) was an English Romanticist landscape painter. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as 'the painter of light' and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.”Read more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._M._W._Turner
About ASTT: “Before the Trinidad Art Society was born, a small group of painters, poets and writers including Amy Leong Pang and Hugh Stollmeyer among others – dubbed the “Society of Trinidad Independents”, taking their cue from the modernist movements in Europe- pointed the country into the headwinds of contemporary art. They revelled in Gauguin, Modigliani and the growing fascination with African art; their metaphysical leanings found a ready response in Shango – Baptist beliefs with strong echoes of Orisha in Benin. The group ran afoul of a fundamentalist press whose vitriolic attacks were partially responsible for the disintegration of the body (after nine years) in 1938. Their pioneering visual work, however, was to have a profound influence on the development of art in Trinidad and Tobago.”Read more: http://artsocietytt.org/about/

Since then the group has had eleven annual shows and will be having its next annual Plein Air show at the Dockyard Arts Centre, opening in September, 2015 ... Usually every week, depending on weather, an email is sent out to the group, saying that we are going to be at a particular location, most often on Sunday and occasionally on a Saturday. The meeting places vary from private homes to public spaces all over the island. We start around 9.30 and paint until noon, at which time we put up all the work that has been done and have a group critique, the object of which is to help people grow and improve their skills. During the session the more experienced painters in the group often spend time going around offering advice and encouragement to anyone who needs help.”Read more: http://www.bermudapleinair.com/about-us/bermuda-plein-air/

About the Venue: “Since 2008, Alice Yard has run a residency programme hosting artists, curators, and other creative practitioners wishing to visit and work in our space and with our network of collaborators, or to research and experience the contemporary art scene in Port of Spain. We have hosted visitors on stays ranging from a few days to a few months, some focusing on a specific project or work in progress, others more open-ended and exploratory. We have also hosted “local” residencies for Trinidad-based artists requiring temporary working space to explore an idea or complete a project. . . . Alice Yard is at once a physical space, a collaborative network, and an ongoing conversation about contemporary art and creativity in the Caribbean. Based in the backyard of the house at 80 Roberts Street, Woodbrook, Port of Spain, Alice Yard has been a venue for creative experiment since opening in September 2006. We draw on the long tradition of communal “yard” spaces in urban Trinidad, places of improvisation and exchange.” — Read more: http://aliceyard.blogspot.com/p/alice-yard-residency-programme.html and https://www.facebook.com/aliceyard/info
