About ASTT: “Before the Trinidad Art Society was born, a small group of painters, poets and writers including Amy Leong Pang and Hugh Stollmeyer among others - dubbed the "Society of Trinidad Independents", taking their cue from the modernist movements in Europe- pointed the country into the headwinds of contemporary art. They revelled in Gauguin, Modigliani and the growing fascination with African art; their metaphysical leanings found a ready response in Shango - Baptist beliefs with strong echoes of Orisha in Benin. The group ran afoul of a fundamentalist press whose vitriolic attacks were partially responsible for the disintegration of the body (after nine years) in 1938. Their pioneering visual work, however, was to have a profound influence on the development of art in Trinidad and Tobago.”Read more: http://artsocietytt.org/history.html

Exhibition: "Ivan Remembered" to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Ivan ENDS on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the National Gallery — Cayman Islands, West Indies

"Spider Tree" (2004) by Courtney Platt for National Gallery https://www.nationalgallery.org.ky/
Exhibition: "Ivan Remembered" opens in Cayman to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Ivan on Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 6-8pm; show runs through Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the National Gallery — Cayman Islands, West Indies; Event Details - Where: National Gallery of the Cayman Islands; Location: Esterley Tibbetts Highway, Grand Cayman; Telephone: 345-945-8111; email: info@nationalgallery.org.ky
Event Description: “New Exhibition Opens in Cayman to Commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Hurricane Ivan. The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is set to exhibit a photographic commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan – a large, long-lived hurricane that caused widespread damage in the Caribbean and United States in 2004. The exhibition opens 6 September 2014 and is kindly sponsored by Fidelity Insurance, ‘Fidelity Insurance, and our co-sponsors Cayman First and Guardian General, are pleased to support the National Gallery in this exhibition and its efforts to remember the devastation that Hurricane Ivan wreaked on the islands, its aftermath and, most importantly, the community spirit that saw Cayman rebuild itself. We encourage everyone to come out and remember this significant event in Cayman's recent history,’ says Richard Scrivens, New Business Executive at Fidelity Insurance. NGCI Curator Natalie Urquhart has worked closely with Cayman’s top commercial photographers Courtney Platt and David Wolfe, whose stunning photos of the aftermath of the storm were featured in NGCI’s 2004 exhibition Emergence. The Ivan Remembered exhibition, set a decade later, will consist of 45+ fine art photographs, interspersed with powerful quotes from the public remembering their experiences – both challenging and uplifting – during and after Hurricane Ivan. Urquhart explains, ‘While it has been ten years since the storm passed, most of us continue to have strong, emotion-laden memories associated with Ivan and its aftermath so we felt it was important to commemorate the anniversary via this exhibition. This is really a ‘part two’ of the Emergence exhibition that we hosted soon after Ivan in 2004. It is a closure of sorts.’ Featured photographers include Courtney Platt and David Wolfe, as well as other artists such as Sheree Ebanks, Juilie Corsetti, Mary McCallum, Jenna Arnold, and Darvin Ebanks. The exhibition will also showcase a short film, created by NGCI and Monster Media as part of the 2004 Emergence exhibition, which features interviews of well-known local artists and was filmed shortly after the natural disaster. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, 6 September 2014 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, and the exhibition will run until 27 September 2014. For more information visit www.nationalgallery.org.ky, email info@nationalgallery.org.ky, or call (345) 945 8111.” Read more: https://www.facebook.com/NatGalCayman

About the Women in Art Organisation: “The Women In Art Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago was founded by artist, Fraulein Rudder on 18th July, 1996. She saw the need for women artists to be brought to the fore and have more exposure; thus creating an awareness of their contribution to the arts. By exploring, discovering and developing techniques, and exhibiting with the Annual Women In Art exhibition, this has been achieved over the last sixteen years under her leadership. The organization also encourages young aspiring artists through the Biennial Art Competition for Fifth and Sixth Form Art students, which was introduced in 1998 and has been quite successful through the years.” Read more: http://womeninart-tt.org/history
